Saying goodbye to Mike and Barry

This week is a sad one in two ways; we have to say goodbye to two good friends.

Mike was one of the porters here at the 'fun factory' He was big and loud and fun. Wednesday morning he came in, sat in his familiar place outside the sports hall and just quietly died. When a big rough rugby player of a guy dies, it is quite surprising to hear such an outpouring of affection for him. Although he had some sort of embolism in his brain about seven years ago, he had seemed in good health these days so his passing still came as a great shock. People are quite stunned. He was the same age as quite a few of us here, just 52, so it seems a bit uncomfortably close too. I shall miss him, a kind man who never complained, liked by all.

We lose Barry this week too, well, next week to be accurate. He is taking early retirement from his job in charge of 'X-ray spectroscopy', amongst other things. He is another man we shall miss more than we can know. I have been able to talk to Barry about any subject at any time over the whole 27 years that I have known him. He is never too busy for you, never judges you (not out loud anyway!) and I have never been let down by him. Although he is religious he does not sermonise or preach and he keeps a broad mind about other peoples' beliefs. I shall miss his advice whether personal, professional or musical. I hope to see him again on many occasions.

In memory of Mike Hibbard
It is with great sadness that TeamBath learned of the death of Mike Hibbard, a chargehand porter at the University of Bath’s Department of Sports Development and Recreation.

Mike, who was 52, had worked at the University of Bath for 30 years, including the last seven at the Department of Sport. His wife, Elaine, also works within the department.

A keen sporting enthusiast, he used to play rugby for Oldfield Old Boys and was an Honorary Vice-President of TeamBath FC.

Mike passed away suddenly on Wednesday (20th June) and a funeral service takes place at Haycombe Crematorium at 1.30pm on Friday 29th June. It will be followed by a wake at the Rugby Club, Midsomer Norton to which all are welcome.

Mike was known for his sense of fun and in celebration of his life his family has requested that men wear shorts to the funeral.

Ged Roddy, Director of Sport at the University of Bath, said: “Mike was incredibly popular with everybody and we are all going to miss him. “Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Elaine and to their two children, James and Emma. “Mike saw a lot of changes in his time here and he was part of what has become a close-knit family,” he added.

“His commitment went well beyond turning up every day and doing a good job,” he added. “He got involved in everything here. You can’t replace people like Mike. He was the sort of person that makes the University such a special place.”

Among his many friends at the University was Andy Shipp, also a chargehand porter, who had known Mike since Andy came to work at the University in 1981.

“Mike was a really genuine and a really nice guy,” said Andy. “He had a heart of gold and would help anyone out. I never heard anyone say a bad word about him or him say a bad word about anyone else, and you can’t say that about too many people.”

Mike was also membership secretary of the University of Bath UNISON branch.

Angela Harrington, chair of the branch, knew Mike for 30 years. She said: “We are all absolutely devastated. Mike is irreplaceable and we feel we have lost a lifelong friend.

“Mike was my sounding board. He was always a voice of reason and common sense, and he could always be relied upon.”

Mike’s family have requested that the family only provide flowers at the funeral, but donations can be sent to Frenchay Hospital Intensive Care Unit (cheques only please, c/o Co-operative Funeralcare, 4-5 Wells Road, Radstock, BA3 3RN) or given in an envelope at the funeral. Gina Godridge is doing a collection at the University. You can contact Gina on 01225 383636.

Any staff wishing to attend should contact Lisa Ashcroft on 01225 383940, as a minibus will be leaving from the University.
